First Year Expectations: What to Know About New Claims

New to workers compensation claims? Here's what to expect in the first year and how to set yourself up for success.

If you are dealing with your first workers compensation claim, the process can feel overwhelming. Understanding what to expect helps you navigate it better.

The First 30 Days

Notification. Report the injury to your insurer as soon as possible. Most schemes require notification within specific timeframes.

Initial assessment. The insurer will assess the claim and determine liability. This usually happens within a few weeks.

Medical examination. You may be asked to see a medical practitioner for an initial assessment.

Claim decision. The insurer will decide whether to accept or dispute the claim.

The First 3 to 6 Months

A treatment plan is developed with your medical provider if the claim is accepted. The claim will be reviewed regularly to monitor progress. Discussions about return-to-work options begin, even if full-time work is not immediately possible. Regular communication between employer, worker, medical provider, and insurer is essential.

The First Year

Medical treatment continues as needed. Most workers return to some form of work during the first year. By the end of the first year, the claim usually stabilises into a pattern. If full recovery is not expected, long-term management plans are developed.

Key Success Factors

Clear communication keeps all parties informed and aligned. Follow medical advice and attend appointments. Even partial return-to-work benefits recovery. Keep records of all communications and medical information. Do not wait for problems to emerge. Address issues early.

Most claims progress smoothly when all parties work together effectively.
